It was 43 degrees and rainy when I got up for this race last weekend May 14th...I thought to myself I'd never be biking in this type of weather if this was just a workout, but this was different of course, and at least I didn't have to swim!!
I had a tough time trying to figure out what to wear so I packed a lot of different options and headed out the door. I was pretty excited for the first race of the season and wanted to see what I could do with my runs especially since I haven't done much speed work due to the IM training.
I warmed up with Greta Simpson which was fun and left pretty good at the start of the race. It was just three of us girls in the elite wave. I started off pretty strong with a 6:08 first mile. That sort of scared me because I was thinking I'd gone out too fast. I had Hilatry Patzer right in front of me but I decided to hold strong instead of killing myself trying to catch her. She had a very strong run.
Coming into the transition I was not cold yet, but my hands were getting there. I hopped on the bike and had trouble getting my gloves on and my bike shoes due to the cold hands. I was so slow in the transition that Greta Simpson who was about 40sec back from me on the run came into the transition while I was still fumbling around...Geez!
The bike was COLD and there were lots of little turns. It started to rain also on the bike, not bad, but enough to make my hands even colder. I knew that T2 was going to be a great challenge. I was just hoping I'd be able to undo my helmet, as I've had trouble with that before with my cold hands. I felt fairly strong on the bike.
T2 was a similar story as T1. I actually managed to pass Hilary, the first place girl on the bike, but due to my fumbling around she came out of T2 ahead of me, and Greta was pretty darn close also.
The run went pretty well, I felt strong it's just that my feet and hands were so numb it took a long while before I felt normal at least with my feet. I never caught up to Hilary, she had a very strong second run also, but overall I was happy with how I felt mostly.
Run 1: 19:57 (as Gabe's camera recorded, although results said it was 20:07 (5K run, 6:43 pace)
Bike: 14miles 37:58 22.1 mph
Run 2: was shorter than 3 miles, about 2.7 17:18 (6:56 pace)
Overall Time: 1:17:38
T1 over a min, T2 over a min.
Second place woman, very happy with the first race just wish it was warmer!
Things to remember here: Lots of bike turns, hands were very cold have to work on faster transitions.
Next up: New Bri Sprint!
